Cassandra’s Kinship Care Story: Welcoming a “Bonus-Baby”

On Easter morning, April 20, 2025, Cassandra’s niece L came into the world under difficult circumstances. Born with fentanyl and high amounts of methadone in her system, L needed care, stability, and unconditional love.

Just three days later, Cassandra and her husband stepped forward to take her in, obtaining temporary guardianship. By May 19, they had full permanent guardianship, making L a cherished, permanent part of their family.

The couple already had two boys of their own, eight and four, but they didn’t hesitate to open their home and hearts. As Cassandra shared, “It helps a lot with trying to manage everything now being a family of five with a bonus-baby!”

Through a referral from Waypoint, Cassandra connected with Step Up Parents. We were able to provide a grocery card and help with a gas bill to ease some of the financial strain.

“This program really makes a difference in people’s lives—definitely in my family’s!” she told us. “You all make it a little easier to cope with this whole process.”

We’re inspired by Cassandra’s compassion, resilience, and commitment to her family. Her story is a reminder that kinship caregivers are unsung heroes—stepping up in challenging moments to keep children safe and loved.
