Kinship Care Story: After Raising Their Nephews, This Couple Steps Up to Raise Their Grandchildren
Jamie and James first became kinship caregivers more than ten years ago when their nephews entered their care as a result of their parents' substance use disorder. They stepped into the caregiver role without hesitation, providing the boys with the stability, safety, and unconditional love they desperately needed during a traumatic time. Their commitment to the children ultimately led to the successful adoption of their nephews, and they have continued to provide them with a nurturing and permanent home.
Just days after their youngest adopted son celebrated his 18th birthday, Jamie and James received another life-changing phone call. They were informed that their grandchildren would be entering their care following a serious motor vehicle accident involving James's daughter. According to reports, she was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and substances, with a blood alcohol level well above the legal limit. The vehicle overturned with the children inside, placing their lives at significant risk. Fortunately, the children survived the accident, but the incident highlighted the severity of their mother's ongoing struggles with alcohol and substance use disorder.
Once again, Jamie and James made the selfless decision to step forward to ensure their grandchildren remained with family rather than entering traditional foster care. After spending the last decade raising their adopted sons, they are now beginning their kinship caregiving journey all over again. While they are deeply committed to providing their grandchildren with the love, stability, and security they deserve, the unexpected placement has brought significant emotional, physical, and financial challenges. Despite these obstacles, Jamie and James remain steadfast in their dedication to keeping their family together and providing their grandchildren with a safe, nurturing home where they can begin to heal from the trauma they have experienced.
The unexpected addition of two young children to Jamie and James's household has placed a substantial financial strain on the family. While they welcomed their grandchildren without hesitation to ensure they remained in a safe and loving environment, the sudden increase in household expenses has created significant challenges. Step Up Parents was able to lend a hand with food and clothing.
“Having our two grandchildren come to live with us this summer has been a significant adjustment for all of us, and financially this is such a huge help,” they wrote to us. “We truly appreciate the support and generosity.”
