Kinship Care Story: A Grandmother Gives Her Granddaughters a Safe Place to Grow

Editor’s Note: Children’s names have been changed to protect their privacy.

Two years ago, Kathy never imagined she would become the full-time caregiver for her two granddaughters.

After her son lost his apartment because of a rent increase, he and his daughters moved in with her. When he could no longer stay in her senior housing apartment, he moved in with friends, leaving Lucy and Grace in Kathy’s care.

As her son’s depression worsened and he began using drugs, neither parent was able to care for the girls. Concerned about making medical decisions and ensuring they had the care they needed, Kathy petitioned the court for guardianship. She was granted guardianship and has been raising her granddaughters ever since.

Today, Lucy, 8, and Grace, 6, are doing well. “They are both beautiful, sweet girls who are now thriving,” Kathy shared.

The girls miss their parents, but there have been positive changes. Kathy’s son is currently in rehab and calls them every night. Katherine has made sure the girls are receiving counseling to help them cope.

The journey has not been without challenges, but Kathy remains focused on giving them a stable, loving home.

Step Up Parents was happy to support Kathy by providing a $200 Walmart gift card to buy clothing for the girls, as well as $300 in rent assistance. She has also received support from other community organizations, including help with new bunk beds for her granddaughters.

“Thank you for all that you do for families like mine,” Kathy said.
