Kinship Care Story: A Teen Finds Stability, Support, and a Place to Belong

Editor’s Note: The child’s name has been changed to protect her privacy.

When Heather and William welcomed their teenage niece into their home, they already had two young children of their own. Becoming caregivers to a teenager was not something they had planned for, but when their niece Mikayla needed a safe place to go, they knew what they had to do.

“It wasn’t something we planned for,” Heather said. “But family is family, and we couldn’t imagine letting her face that situation alone.”

Like many kinship caregivers, Heather and William found themselves adjusting quickly to a new reality. Overnight, their family expanded, bringing new emotional, financial, and practical responsibilities.

“Taking on this new role required us to adjust quickly,” Heather said. “We already had two young children to care for, and suddenly our family included a teenager as well.”

While the transition came with challenges, it also brought unexpected rewards. Since coming into their care, Mikayla has become an integral part of the family. Heather and William helped her prepare for prom, purchased a new wardrobe, connected her with needed services and providers, and began helping her plan for her future.

One of the most encouraging signs has come from her school. “Teachers and staff have shared that they are seeing real positive changes in Mikayla since she has been with us,” Heather said. “Hearing that has meant so much to our family.”

What surprised Heather and William most was how naturally Mikayla fit into their household. “She has fit in as though she was always meant to be here,” Heather said.

Watching the relationship grow between Mikayla and her younger cousins has been especially meaningful. “It has been heartwarming to see her embrace her role as a big sister to our toddlers and build such a loving relationship with them.”

For Heather and William, seeing Mikayla feel safe, loved, and supported has made every challenge worthwhile. “Watching Mikayla feel safe, loved, and supported has made every sacrifice worth it,” Heather said.

Families who step into kinship caregiving often face unexpected financial pressures as they work to meet the needs of the children in their care. Step Up Parents was honored to support Heather and William’s family by assisting with childcare expenses and providing a gift card to help cover household necessities.

“We believe every child deserves a stable home and people who will stand by them,” Heather said. “We’re grateful to be able to provide that for Mikayla, and we’re thankful that organizations like Step Up Parents exist to support families who answer that call.”
