Kinship Care Story: A Fictive Caregiver’s Journey

When Sarah became a fictive caregiver for two children connected to her family, she didn’t hesitate. Though she is not related to them by birth, adoption, or marriage, the bond was already there. The children are half-siblings of her son, and when their parents struggled with substance use disorder, Sarah opened her home and her heart.

As a single mother raising three children, Sarah suddenly found herself balancing even more responsibilities — emotionally, physically, and financially. Like many fictive caregivers, she stepped into the role because the children needed someone they trusted who loved them.

Step Up Parents was able to support Sarah’s family with a bike and a laptop to help meet the children’s everyday needs. These items may seem simple, but for families navigating unexpected caregiving responsibilities, they can make a meaningful difference.

“Jason also got his laptop! He was beyond excited and so happy,” Sarah shared. “I can’t thank you enough for all your help!”

Sarah also expressed how much the support meant to her family as a whole: “I cannot thank you and your organization enough for your support with this. It truly means the world to me and I know the kids as well.”

Kinship care comes in many forms. Fictive caregivers like Sarah remind us that family is not only defined by biology, but by love, commitment, and showing up when children need stability most.

Because of supporters like you, caregivers facing difficult circumstances don’t have to do it alone.
